What can I do differently to get a job?
The company I've been working for since 2009 cut all my hours after the holidays. I've been searching for work like a mad man every day since. I live in a city where the job market is horrible, but simply cannot afford to move anywhere else. Most of my experience is in Retail, Restaurant Management, and Hospitality at resorts. (20+ yrs) When a local business does have an opening, I know they all have hundreds of resumes and applications to go through. I know that's how it's been at the company I'm presently employed by (technically), and I assume it's like that all around the country these days. There have been some call-backs and no matter how great I think the interview goes, I'm not getting the jobs. Of course I've been applying for jobs I want, but I'm also applying for many that I'm not crazy about and know I'm very overqualified for. I simply need money like everyone else and will do what I need to do to at least pay the rent. I obviously don't tell them that and am doing my best to show each company the same amount of enthusiasm and interest. I don't know if I'm overdressing, overqualified and making them think I won't stick around, or simply making a different impression than I think I am. Sorry to jabber on like this, but with so many people out there going through the same thing, I figured it'd be a good idea to ask for some input. When every open position around town has hundreds of applicants, how can I rise to the top of the pool and better my chances? Any thoughts or suggestions would be great!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks!
