What is a sturdy metal for a man's ring?

My boy friend and I are thinking of getting promise rings together, but he is afraid of ruining it because of all the work he does. All of the rings I have been looking at and liking are sterling silver, but I don't know how that will stand up for him? Is titanium sturdy? Would it match with sterling silver? Please help?
